The best way to approach this very personal journey is to start at the beginning, remembering the individuals and circumstances that led me first into medicine and then somehow into anaesthesia, from the last hurrah of open chloroform and ether to the highly sophisticated technology of today. Of those individuals a few were idols, some were teachers, others simply colleagues and friends, all of them overshadowed by the pioneers who showed the way. This is their story as well as mine, and occasionally that of fascinating places along the road.
