Mathern Day Nursery was established in April 1989 by Mandy Gore, who has continued to run the Nursery to this day. We are proud that we were the first Day nursery to open in the Chepstow area.
The Nursery is housed in the former Victorian Village school building which was sympathetically modernised to support the Nursery. In 2010 we celebrated our 21st birthday with an open day / party for the local community and was attended by over 150 past and present pupils. This was followed by an open day/party to celebrate our 25th birthday which was attended by over 200 people.
Initially the Nursery catered for children from 2 ˝ years, however we soon became aware that there was a demand from working mothers to cater for younger children and babies. Further investment was made in the Nursery to create an upper floor to cater for this expansion without changing the external appearance of the building. The Nursery is part of the local community just as the Village school was and we intend to maintain that harmony with the local environment.
With the introduction of the extra space the Nursery became registered to care for babies from 6 weeks old – another first in the Chepstow area. Over the last 25 years the Nursery has steadily grown to now cater for up to 48 children in any session, at the same time we have maintained the home or family atmosphere. For example, we encourage our staff to interact with all children , not just those in their immediate care.
Our location within a rural village allows us to take the children in small groups on walks or strolls in pleasant countryside and a quiet village. Outdoor play is an important part of development and our daily routine. We have a large garden / playground with a variety of equipment as well as a field at the rear of the building which the children can explore in safety.
The Nursery is managed by Mandy Kane, she are generally at the Nursery every working day – this hands on approach has ensured that the quality of care and family atmosphere has been maintained over the last 25 years. A team of 16 Nursery nurses – with a wide range of experience and formal qualifications – focus on the care and development of the children that they look after. Staff turnover at the Nursery is low, which again reinforces the stable environment for your child's development.
The Nursery is an ESTYN approved provider of Early Years education, the curriculum for our pre-school room is linked to the Foundation Phase. Under current legislation subsidised LEA funding for up to 5 sessions per week can be “spent” at the Nursery from the term after your child’s 3rd birthday.
Mathern Day Nursery is proud of its 25 year reputation for delivering quality childcare in the Chepstow area.
